Rangers set for transfer blunder as Danilo ‘close’ to agreeing deal
Rangers look set to ship out outcast Danilo ahead of the 2026-27 campaign as Derek McInnes continues to make changes to his squad.
Reports have emerged that Botafogo are close to signing the 27-year-old striker, who will join the club on loan with an option to buy.
The buy option will be triggered based on the number of matches he plays for the Brazilian outfit.
However, this is a massive mistake from Rangers and McInnes, as it risks Danilo returning to the club once again this summer.
The striker had been loaned out to NEC Nijmegen during the second half of the 2025-26 campaign.
The Dutch side also possessed an option to buy, but a series of poor performances resulted in the club not activating this clause.
Rangers risk Danilo returning to the club next summer
Danilo’s drop-off in recent years has been horrific.
In the 2025-26 campaign, he only scored four times in 26 appearances for both Rangers and NEC Nijmegen in what was a dire season.
With it being clear that Danilo is no longer part of the Gers’ first-team plans, a sale should have been a priority this summer.
Instead, the club looks set to repeat the mistakes of the winter window, and send the striker out on loan, based on the report from Anthony Joseph.
While this can be triggered when a set number of appearances have been made, if he performs as poorly as he has done in recent months, Botafogo will simply stop playing him.
Therefore, this is a horrific blunder by Rangers, and they could once again find themselves searching for a new club for Danilo in 12 months time.
Who else could leave Rangers this summer?
Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Rangers will consider selling Connor Barron this summer if a “big offer” comes in for him.
The midfielder has been linked to Serie A side Bologna in recent weeks, who are believed to be long-term admirers.
While Rangers are reluctant to let him go, they would contemplate a sale if they were to receive an offer between £8million and £10m this summer.
Nevertheless, it remains to be seen where Barron will be playing his football ahead of the 2026-27 campaign as McInnes continues to overhaul his squad.
