Real Madrid told to hijack Newcastle United’s Kieran Tierney deal – pundit
Frank McAvennie has suggested Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney would be a “better” option for Real Madrid than Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland and West Ham striker suggested either Robertson or his international teammate Tierney would be a good fit for the Spanish giants.
According to The Mail (23 May), Los Blancos have placed 29-year-old Robertson on a list of potential summer reinforcements and they prepare for the departure of left-back Ferland Mendy.
Robertson’s contract at Anfield runs until 2026 and he has been firm favourite on the left-hand side of defence under Jurgen Klopp, with back-up Kostas Tsimikas struggling to oust him from the starting XI.
Last year (2022), Tierney was heavily linked with a move to the Bernabeu but ultimately remained at Arsenal where his deal also runs until 2026.
The former Celtic defender has struggled with injuries since his arrival in London back in 2019 and last summer’s addition of Oleksandr Zinchenko has pushed Tierney down the Emirates pecking order.
Tierney is a top target for Newcastle United going into the summer window and they are in pole position to sign him.
McAvennie suggested either one of the Scotland internationals would be a great addition to Carlo Ancelotti’s side, amid a mooted St James’ Park ambush.
“It is good for Scotland and Scottish football,” he told Football Insider.
“They were talking about Kieran Tierney as well. I think Tierney is better than Andy, I think he is a better defender.

“I think either of them would fit in at Real Madrid. Either one alongside Vinicius Junior would be magnificent.
“I could see it working with either of them but Liverpool certainly need a revamp.“
