Reece James and Chelsea teammate ‘demanding bumper pay rises’ after reveal – pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Mason Mount and Reece James could be set for a wage rise as Todd Boehly looks to keep the pair at Chelsea.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Tottenham and Aston Villa right-back said there is an “easy fix” to secure the long-term future of the England internationals.

The Telegraph revealed (11 July) Boehly was “surprised” that Mount, 23, and James, 22, were at the lower end of the Blues’ pay-scale.

The new owner is said to be looking to “rectify” this by offering both players a new contract at Chelsea.

Mount has two years left at Stamford Bridge whilst James’ deal expires in 2025.

When asked if he thought the players could be offered higher wages, Hutton told Football Insider: “These are two players that Thomas Tuchel will want to build his team round.

Reece James is an exceptional football player. He’s so young, he’s won a lot in the game. Mason Mount, we know how good he is.

You want to tie these guys down to long-term deals. If the owner is now coming in and saying these are special players for us, we want to keep a hold of them.

If their salaries, compared to some of the others, are low, that’s music to your ears if you’re a player in that situation you’re saying, ‘right well offer me something new and I’ll sign it’.

So I don’t see that being a problem. They look happy where they are, they’re young, they’re hungry enough, they want to improve so it’s an easy fix.
