Reece James bids emotional farewell after confirmed Chelsea exit

Reece James has sent an emotional goodbye message on social media after confirmation of a Chelsea exit.

James started just 12 Premier League games for the Blues last season, but had an encouraging end to the campaign as he helped his side secure Champions League football.

Enzo Maresca’s side finished fourth in the table, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 on the final day, with the right-back playing the full 90 minutes.

The 25-year-old tasted European success as well, coming on at half-time as Chelsea produced a comeback to beat Real Betis 4-1 in the Conference League final.

James bids farewell

James has come through the academy in West London, and has just completed his sixth season as part of the senior squad.

The Blues club captain has struggled badly with injuries throughout his career, and is yet to string together a full campaign without disruption.

On Tuesday, James was forced to bid farewell to one of his closest friends at Chelsea, after it was confirmed that Marcus Bettinelli has joined Manchester City.

Taking to Instagram, the defender paid tribute to his friend, posting a photo of the pair together with the caption: “Thank you for all the memories big bro!

“Through every setback, every injury, you were always there to lift me up when I felt like I had nothing left.

“You’ve been more than a teammate, you’ve been a brother from the day you arrived.

“It’s tough to see you go, but I’m forever grateful for everything you’ve done for me and my career.”

James aims for England lineup

Football Insider Verdict

James played the full 90 minutes as England limped past Andorra, as Harry Kane’s second-half goal secured a 1-0 win in the World Cup qualifier.

With Thomas Tuchel now in charge of the Three Lions, the full-back is working with his former Chelsea manager, which could inspire him to replicate his best form on the international stage.

For a number of years now, England have been blessed at right-back, and James has often struggled to force his way into contention.

However, with the World Cup taking place in North America this time next year, the Chelsea skipper currently looks the most likely option for the first game of the tournament.

Of course it will be dependent on whether he can stay fit next season, but if James puts together an injury-free campaign, he will likely be Tuchel’s starting right-back.
