Tottenham will be required to stump up the cash this summer if they are to sign Swansea defender Alfie Mawson, according to a reliable journalist.
The Sun reporter Alan Nixon claimed on his personal Twitter account on Sunday morning that the 23-year-old centre-back is set to command a fee of at least £20million after an impressive season in 2016-17.
Nixon’s revelation comes after a report by the Sun had claimed that Tottenham were considering a £15million move to add further depth to their defensive ranks ahead of the new campaign.
Mawson made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Swans last season, and scored six goals as they secured their Premier League status for at least another year.
He had only moved to the Liberty Stadium in a £5.5million deal last summer, but his meteoric rise during his first year at the Welsh club has since his stock almost treble.
Mauricio Pochettino is after a ball-playing centre-back in the coming months, and has taken a liking to the Swansea man, with the Sun claiming he has already made contact over a potential deal.
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham boasted the best defensive record in the Premier League last term, but there is still a desire to add further depth to their ranks ahead of the new season. Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen has proven a partnership difficult to break, although there is not much cover if one or both were to be sidelined for a prolonged period. Therefore, a move for a new defender represents a wise choice in the transfer market this summer. However, while Mawson impressed on his Premier League debut last season, Spurs can perhaps find themselves more proven quality at a higher level for a similar price.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the club are reportedly in advanced talks to sign this La Liga sensation.
