Report details where Rangers 26-year-old will be playing after January window slams shut

Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday will remain on loan Gabala after the January transfer window closes despite him barely getting a game for the Azerbaijani side, according to a report.

The Daily Record claims that Halliday, 26, was being considered by Graeme Murty for a recall in January due to his midfield options being thinned in recent weeks with Graham Dorrans injured and Ryan Jack suspended.

Halliday joined Gabala on a season-long loan deal in the summer after he was discarded from the first-team by Pedro Caixinha.

However since his left-field move to the Premyer Liqasi, the midfielder has made just seven appearances across all competitions, with just three coming in the league.

Gabala general manager Zaur Azizov has confirmed that his side are yet to receive any kind of contact from Rangers about whether or not they want to recall Halliday, and even if they did, they would not be willing to terminate his season-long deal early.

“Firstly, we have had no contact from Rangers about him” he said, as quoted by the Record.

“They have not asked to end the loan agreement.”

Football Insider verdict

Although Rangers may be short on midfielders at the moment, there’s no point in calling Halliday back – simply because he is not good enough. If he cannot get into the Gabala first-team then there’s no way that he would be near enough the standard, or even the fitness, to walking into Murty’s starting line-up. With the winter break in effect soon, the Gers may also be looking at some of their midfielders being fit to return, as well as the possible to sign up some new faces. Mark Allen should hopefully be busy in January to try and secure some new signings in order to stop this season petering out so early.

In other Rangers news, the Gers must make a January swoop for this midfield dynamo known as the Turkish Messi.
