Report gives details on reported Rangers pursuit of released veteran defender
Former West Ham defender James Collins is not being considered as even a short-term option for Rangers, according to a report, after it was claimed he was being targeted by Steven Gerrard.
According to the Evening Times, the Welshman is not viewed as a potential signing this summer after his release by the Hammers, despite the Gers being in the market for central defenders.
The departure of Russell Martin and David Bates, and disappointing form of Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves, has left the Ibrox giants looking for a number of defensive reinforcements, but the West Ham icon does not look likely to be filling the gap.
Football Insider verdict:
Collins would have been a very risky signing for the Gers and fans will be glad the hear he isn’t a target for Steven Gerrard this summer. The veteran doesn’t have the sort of pedigree that would make fans forget about his age – nor is he someone who is a particular stand-out performer. After leaving West Ham, Collins is likely to want a sizeable wage and it doesn’t make sense to bring the defender in at the highest end of the Gers’ wage bill. The money that would be used to sign Collins would be far better used elsewhere to bring in a younger defender who could be in the side for a number of years to come. This will be a bullet dodged by the Gers and there’s very little about it that gives the impression it would ever have been a success had he moved to Ibrox. Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen should instead focus on bringing in defenders who can have the side built around them.
