Report: Liverpool make approach to sign Belgian centre-back, rival PL side also in hunt
By Aramide Oladipo
Liverpool are interested in signing Inter Milan defender Zinho Vanheusden this summer, according to a report.
Nieuwsblad claims that the Merseyside club have contacted the Italian giants about the availability of the 18-year-old in the current transfer window.
The Belgian newspaper claims fellow Premier League side Southampton have also made an enquiry about the teenager.
However, the report claims that the Serie A side made it very clear to the English teams that they have no intention of selling the youngster this summer as they see him as an important part of the first-team in the near-future.
Vanheusden has spent two years at the San Siro but he has yet to make an appearance for the senior team.
The centre-back has demonstrated that he can provide an attacking threat as he has notched up seven goals in his short career with the youth team in Italy.
The defender made his debut for Belgium Under-19s earlier this year in the European Championship qualifiers where he played the full 90 minutes.
Vanheusden currently has two years remaining on his contract at the San Siro.
Football Insider verdict
Vanheusden is potentially a player for the future but if Liverpool want to challenge for the major trophies next season, they need to seriously consider adding more experienced talent to the back four. It is likely that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is looking to snap up the teenager before the big boys come into play but the Merseyside club must concentrate on what they will face in the upcoming campaign with Champions League football on the horizon. Liverpool have a decent array of talent in the academy and they should focus on helping their current crop of youngsters develop their game rather than look elsewhere.
