Liverpool are preparing to make a move for Rennes midfielder Benjamin Andre this summer, according to a report.
French newspaper Le Telegramme claims that the Merseyside club will table an offer for the 27-year-old in the upcoming days with the player valued around £15million.
This follows up from the story in the Liverpool Echo which reported that the Reds were not interested in the Frenchman this summer.
Andre played in a number of different positions across the midfield for the French outfit last season but his preferred position appears to be in the centre.
The Frenchman made 329 interceptions in the entire top flight division last season, the most of any other player in the league.
The midfielder made a total of 38 appearances and contributed with three assists last season, as Rennes finished in ninth place in the table.
Andre currently has five years remaining on his contract with the Ligue 1 outfit.
Football Insider verdict
From his statistics, it is clear that Andre has the potential to deliver performances similar to two-time Premier League winner N’Golo Kante. His ability to recover the ball would be a fantastic asset for Jurgen Klopp’s side who base their game on high pressing – and his versatility would also be an added bonus. However, it would be a huge gamble for the Reds as they would be spending around £15million for a player who has not competed on the international stage nor featured in a single Europa League or Champions League match. Andre does not appear to be the type of player to catapult into the potential Premier League champions therefore Klopp should be looking at other midfield options.
