Leeds United boss Thomas Christiansen is looking to secure a loan move for Manchester United’s James Wilson or Liverpool’s Danny Ings in January, according to a report.
The Sunday Mirror claim in their print edition (12/11) that the Danish manager is desperate to improve on his options up front and has identified both of the Premier League giants’ fringe men as ideal to help the cause at Elland Road.
His search for striking options comes despite already having no less than four out-and-out strikers available at his disposal, all of which arrived under his stewardship over the summer.
However of those new signings only Pierre-Michel Lasogga has netted in the Championship, with Jay-Roy Grot failing to find the net in nine appearances and Caleb Ekuban, as a result of injury, and Pawel Cibicki both finding their game time limited.
Ings, with one outing this season, is set to be allowed to depart on loan but Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is hoping to secure a deal with a Premier League side, which may leave Christiansen targeting Wilson, who has no senior appearances for United this season.
Football Insider verdict
Christiansen’s decision to target a striker in January indicates that he holds no faith in his current options at Elland Road, which will come as a huge confidence blow to those brought in over the summer. Lasogga started brightly but has gone off the boil, 19-year-old Grot is still very raw and is being given mere minutes from the substitute’s bench, Ekuban has been on the sidelines for most of the season and Cibicki is simply out of favour with the manager. The Whites do need a natural replacement for Chris Wood, with his departure evidently leaving the club in the lurch, but it is not that simple. Ings is the proven option but securing his signature will be a real fight, while Wilson has just five goals in 29 appearances in the second tier, which is hardly an inspiring record. Christiansen must tread carefully though, as the club’s abysmal form means one mistake could see him out the door.
