Report: Rangers make approach for 23-year-old attacker, selling club want seven-figure fee

By Harvey Byrne

Rangers have made an approach to Hearts with talks between the two clubs getting underway for attacker Jamie Walker, according to a report.

Edinburgh News have claimed on their website on Wednesday afternoon that the Gers had verbally put forward a £500,000 transfer offer for the 23-year-old.

However, Hearts are holding out for a seven-figure sum for their star player, who has told the Edinburgh-based team that he won’t extend his contract past his current one, which is set to expire next summer.

It is detailed that Rangers are now expected to try to negotiate further after their initial rejection and their Premiership rivals are “determined” to secure upwards of £1million for Walker.

The left-winger joined the Hearts academy ranks in 2003, but according to his Wikipedia page he is a Rangers fan.

He had to wait until 2012 before making his first team debut for Hearts aged 19 and he seemingly hasn’t looked back, playing 162 times for the club in total, which has brought a return of 39 goals and 34 assists.

Last season alone Walker played in 43 matches in all competitions, returning 15 goals and seven assists from his wide position and Pedro Caixinha may have been highly impressed by the Scotsman.

Football Insider verdict:

Rangers have already brought in five players, including two wingers this summer. However, there is no doubt that due to the performances of several players in the last campaign that they need more depth on the wing. Walker was highly impressive in a Hearts team which finished in fifth place in the Premiership in the last campaign and he can certainly now go to Rangers and help them close the gap with league leaders Celtic. £1million is a lot of money for the Ibrox giants, but it is also a fee they must start spending if they want to progress.

In other Rangers transfer news, Caixinha has advised this Gers man to find a new club.
