Report: Tottenham to swoop for 20-year-old Euro midfield revelation

By Russell Edge

Tottenham are one of several clubs lining up a move for Ajax youngster Donny van de Beek, according to a report.

Dutch football news outlet soccernews.nl claim that Spurs have joined European giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United in the hunt for the 20-year-old midfielder, who has been a revelation in the centre of the park for the Dutch side this season.

Having emerged as a fringe player last season, he has gone on to establish himself as a first team star in their midfield this campaign, starting all but one of the club’s 13 matches across all competitions despite his age.

He has 55 appearances under his belt for Ajax, having scored four goals and chipping in with five assists during his fledgling career, while he has three unused substitute appearances for the Dutch national side.

Football Insider verdict

Tottenham have had their fair share of success of imports from Ajax, with Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen both going on to star for the club. Whether van de Beek would have the same immediate effect, fans would have to wait and see, but he is a graduate of Ajax’s youth system, famed for developing some of the world’s top talent, so there should be little doubts over his potential. However that has drawn interest from some of the biggest clubs around Europe, and Tottenham will face a firm fight if they do pursue his signature. There is also the question of just where he would fit into the side, with Harry Winks, Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier all looking for a first team spot, while Josh Onomah is trying to prove himself on loan at Aston Villa. At least one would have to go if van de Beek did join, so Mauricio Pochettino will have to make that decision if it comes to it.
