Sources: Nottingham Forest make move to appoint Sean Dyche after sacking Ange Postecoglou

Sean Dyche has been contacted about the newly-vacant Nottingham Forest manager’s position, sources have told Football Insider.

Ange Postecoglou was sacked by the Premier League club minutes after Saturday lunchtime’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.

The writing was on the wall for the former Tottenham boss as soon as owner Evangelos Marinakis vacated his seat in the stands during the match in a clear sign he had seen enough of the team under the Australia manager.

Sean Dyche has emerged as the number one contender to take over at Forest while Fulham’s Marco Silva has been targeted but would be a far more complex hire in the middle of the season.

Dyche is sounded out about replacing Postecoglou at Forest

Dyche has already been sounded out by Forest about the post and a deal could be agreed in time for the club’s next match, which is next Thursday’s Europa League clash against Porto.

Dyche’s availability and proven track record in the Premier League are attractive to the Forest hierarchy and Marinakis.

Aged 54, he lives in Nottingham and has significant experience of keeping teams in the Premier League, including Everton and Burnley.

Dyche, who could be Forest’s third manager just two months into the season, last worked at Everton, where he steered the club through the crisis days at the end of the Farhad Moshiri era before leaving in January.

An apprentice at Forest at the end of the great Brian Clough era, he was also a contemporary of Roy Keane.

Dyche’s long-term assistant is Ian Woan, a favourite at Forest who played in the first team for 10 years in the Nineties.

Forest could face a relegation battle this season as they are currently 17th in the Premier League table, just one place above the drop zone and having played a game more than the three clubs below them.

Rafael Benitez is also an option for Nottingham Forest

Sources told Football Insider on 11 October that Rafael Benitez has been identified as another option to replace Postecoglou at Forest.

The Spaniard has enjoyed Premier League managerial stints with Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton and could be nearing a return to the English top-flight.

The former Real Madrid boss has been out of a job since he was sacked by Celta Vigo in March 2024 but would be open to a comeback to coaching.
