Revealed: Liverpool’s long-term plan for Trent Alexander-Arnold – sources
Liverpool could now swoop for more right-back cover in this summer’s transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
The Merseysiders are exploring moves for potential targets with Trent Alexander-Arnold, 24, expected to continue in his new midfield role in the 2023-24 campaign.
Alexander-Arnold took up a midfield role when Liverpool were in possession towards the end of last season – with Jurgen Klopp choosing to use his creative talents further up the pitch at long last.
As a result, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson operated almost as a back three when the Reds were forced to defend.
England manager Gareth Southgate also chose to employ Alexander-Arnold in midfield during last month’s qualifier wins over Malta and North Macedonia.
Both Klopp and Southgate have long fielded calls to move the 24-year-old into a more advanced role amid criticism of his perceived lack of defensive awareness and ability.
But making such a move permanently would leave Liverpool short of right-back options if they were to shift back to a back four.
James Milner, who often filled in at right-back as well as in several other roles, has departed on a free transfer to Brighton while Calvin Ramsay has gone on loan to Preston North End.
It is believed Liverpool are scouring the market for potential right-back cover with big money expected to arrive in the transfer kitty in the coming days.
Football Insider revealed on Monday (17 July) that Liverpool expect to lose both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho this week for a combined fee of around £50million.

Sources have also told Football Insider (17 July) that the Reds and manager Klopp are keen to add two more midfield signings this summer.
A centre-back is also believed to be on the agenda of the club’s transfer chiefs.
