Richarlison cited as Tottenham backed to complete ‘statement’ January signing – expert

Paul Robinson has urged Tottenham to set their sights higher than Kyle Walker-Peters and Adama Traore this January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the board need to deliver Antonio Conte a “next level” right wing-back.

The Athletic‘s Jack Pitt-Brooke expects Spurs to try and sign a right wing-back in the mid-season window.

He named Pedro Porro, Adama Traore and Kyle Walker-Peters as potential arrivals in that position.

Walker-Peters left Spurs to join Southampton, where he plays now, in 2020.

Wolves wide man Traore turned down a move to Spurs a year ago.

Robinson wants Spurs to make a statement signing at right wing-back in a similar vein to Richarlison in the summer.

“I don’t think Kyle Walker-Peters is of the level needed for Spurs,” he told Football Insider. “Yes, he’s a good player but he’s not a drastic improvement on the current options.

“Look at the Richarlison signing, that took Spurs’ attack to the next level. They need a similar calibre of player for the right wing-back position. Walker-Peters would fill a gap but it would not take the club onto the next level.

“They need to support Conte and give him the funds to sign top, top players. They need to set their sights higher. Adam Traore is excellent going forward but there are question marks over him defensively. It would be a risk.

“They need a statement signing in that position. I’m not convinced Walker-Peters and Traore fit the bill.”
