Confirmed: Rarely seen Rangers forward in line to make shock start v Celtic

Rangers manager Graeme Murty has admitted Kenny Miller has put himself “right in the frame” for a place in the starting XI when the Gers face Celtic next weekend at Hampden Park in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

The veteran stiker made his first start since December 13th in Saturday’s 4-0 Scottish Premiership win over Dundee, netting the opening goal for the Ibrox giants.

Murty revealed the 38-year-old’s performance after taking Josh Windass’ place “added to the team” with the veteran knowing “what it takes” to play for the Light Blues, but a start against the Hoops would still come as a shock to many considering his lack of playing time.

“Kenny’s put himself right in the frame for Celtic,” Murty said, as quoted by the Sunday Post.

“He added to the team, scored a goal obviously and he knows what it takes to play for this football club.”

Miller’s appearance against Dundee was his 23rd of the season for the Gers as he took his tally for goals this season to five with his 39th-minute strike, although he has been rarely seen by fans recently, with just three outings in the club’s last 15 league games.

The former Scotland international’s contract at Ibrox is up in the summer with the well-travelled striker expected to hang up his boots.

Football Insider verdict:

With Josh Windass still looking like he could miss the Hampden showdown, Miller would be next in line for a start and his performance against Dundee arguably merits his inclusion against Brendan Rodgers’ side. Although Gers fans were unhappy when Miller was named in the starting XI against Dundee, Gers boss Murty will have felt vindicated in his decision when the striker popped up with the opening goal of the game. Miller has been there and done it all before with Rangers and his experience could be a big boost to the Gers at Hampden.
