Darren Bent insists that Chelsea fans will be up in arms if Antonio Rudiger is sold to Tottenham.
The former Spurs and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits it would be weird for the Blues to strengthen their rivals but that the German star is exactly what the Lilywhites need.
Bent believes that Rudiger, who has 31 caps for Germany under his belt, is actually the best centre-back at Chelsea and that he would be a big improvement for Tottenham.
Bent told Football Insider: “You always need one of the centre-backs to be the main man, playing every single game, I think Tottenham need that rather than having to chop and change every week to find the right balance.
“I like Rudiger, I know at the back end of last season he made one or two mistakes but even now, I believe he’s Chelsea’s best centre-back and it’s not really a good look.
“The Chelsea fans are going to start looking at Frank and maybe going: ‘Hold on, we let Willian go, he’s been brilliant for Arsenal and you let him just walk out the door. Rudiger now, who many Chelsea fans believe is their best defender, just goes and joins your rivals as well in Spurs?’
“I’ve always been a bit funny about letting one of your own players go and make someone stronger and I think if Rudiger was to go to Tottenham he would make their backline stronger so it’s a bit of a weird one.
“If Spurs can go and get him then by all means go and get him because he’d definitely improve their backline. For Mourinho, all he can do is try to get the best players available and if he can go get Rudiger, who’s available, then by all means go and do it.”
