Roberto Firmino expected to be axed from Liverpool XI after footage emerges pre-Wolves – pundit

Roberto Firmino will be axed from the Liverpool starting XI despite his man of the match performance against Southampton.

That is the view of former Tottenham and England number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the selection dilemma facing Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds welcome Wolves to Anfield in their final game of the Premier League season on Sunday.

As per footage from club media (20 May), Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk trained ahead of the fixture in a boost to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Salah, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane are in contention to start against Bruno Lage’s side having sat out of Tuesday’s win at Southampton.

Firmino produced a man of the match display at St. Mary’s on his return to the side.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Firmino should retain his place, Robinson said: “Firmino played against Southampton to give the others a rest.

“I think Salah, Mane and Diaz will come back in against Wolves.

“There is a squad for a reason. Yes, Firmino came in and did well and helped them get a massive three points but that is what was expected of him. That is what the manager wants and that is why he is part of the squad.

“It is a massive game at the weekend so I think Klopp will go full strength and Firmino is not part of Liverpool’s best XI anymore.

“We are in an era of football where you can put in a 10/10 performance on the weekend and be dropped a few days later. That is the way it is. Firmino will be part of the rotation.”
