Robinson fears Liverpool set for Ibrahima Konate ‘blow’ after journalist’s injury update

Paul Robinson has claimed Ibrahima Konate’s injury is “a blow” to Liverpool ahead of the new Premier League season.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one is confident Jurgen Klopp has enough strength in depth to cope with the 23-year-old’s absence.

Konate was withdrawn after 57 minutes of Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Strasbourg on Sunday (31 July).

According to The Athletic‘s James Pearce (1 August), the centre-half is to undergo a scan on his knee following the loss.

Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that the issue was caught early and is only minor.

The Reds kick off their league campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

When asked by Football Insider how big a miss Konate would be, Robinson said: “It would be a blow because he ended the season so well.

You have to look at the strength in depth Liverpool have got though. Klopp will want a full strength squad available but that is not always the case.

They have got plenty of players in that position who can cover. They can cope with it. Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are both top centre-halves.

Losing Konate will be a blow though because he was a revelation last season.”

Konate excelled in his first season for the Reds.

He made 29 appearances across all competitions, including a start in the Champions League final.
