Robinson fumes over Celtic controversy he ‘hates’ after Liverpool left ’embarrassed’ last year

Paul Robinson has called for guards of honour to be “scrapped” after Celtic refused to hold one for Rangers on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and Leeds United number one said he “would hate” to do have done it when he was a player and described it as “an outdated tradition”.

The Hoops did not give Steven Gerrard’s side a guard of honour at Celtic Park, despite the visitors winning the league between their last game and Sunday’s 1-1 draw.

Celtic’s interim boss told Sky Sports in the build up to the fixture that his side would not give their rivals a guard of honour despite Brendan Rodgers calling for his former club to show “humility and class”.

Robinson, a friend and former England teammate of Steven Gerrard backed the Bhoys’ decision and cited Manchester City’s guard of honour for Liverpool last season.

“I would hate to do it as a player, so I understand,” he told Football Insider.

“I have never had to do it but as a competitive, professional player, to give a guard of honour to a team that have beaten you twice, have had a hand in your manager getting sacked – I would hate to give a guard of honour.

“I think they are old school and I think we need to get them out of the game.

“When Manchester City did it last season for Liverpool it was just a token gesture. The Liverpool players looked embarrassed and Man City’s effort was half hearted, the line collapsed before all of the players even walked through.

“It is an outdated tradition and I think it is time we scrapped it. I do not think anybody wants it.”
