Robinson in awe of ‘amazing’ Celtic deal after £8.6m Giakoumakis reveal

Celtic pulled off “an amazing bit of recruitment” with the signing of Giorgos Giakoumakis, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Tottenham and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the deal is a bargain for the price of £2.5million.

The Hoops confirmed the signing of Giakoumakis on a five-year deal on deadline day.

Speaking on The Celtic Exchange Podcast, Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph said the striker would’ve likely cost £8.6million had VVV Venlo not been relegated last season.

Giakoumakis finished the 2020-21 campaign as the Eredivisie’s top scorer with 26 goals despite his side’s relegation.

When asked by Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs for his assessment of the money paid for the Greece international, Robinson said:

“It was an incredible achievement to finish top scorer in a relegated side. It shows that he is a very good striker.

“For the price that they’ve paid it looks like an amazing bit of recruitment.

“Of course, there is a different level of expectation and pressure at Celtic though. It will be a big test for him, playing in front of those fans.

“From Celtic’s point of view though, it is not a risk because the fee is very reasonable.”

Giakoumakis could make his debut this weekend when Ange Postecoglou’s side welcome Ross County to Parkhead.

Speaking to club media shortly after signing the striker revealed he is looking forward to writing history at Celtic.
