Robinson issues ‘big’ Amadou Onana verdict after Everton reveal

Paul Robinson has predicted Amadou Onana to have “a big impact” on Everton this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one was impressed by the 21-year-old on his debut against Aston Villa.

Onana made a cameo appearance on Saturday as the Toffees lost 2-1 at Villa Park.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (13 August), Frank Lampard revealed he was “really pleased” with the midfielder’s performance.

Lampard added “there was a reason” the club spent big to sign the Belgian this summer.

According to Sky Sports (10 August), Everton paid a fee of £33.5million to acquire Onana.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the centre-midfielder’s debut, Robinson said: “I was impressed.

“I think he is going to have a big impact on that team.

“It is a fragile team at the moment. The characters in that team, the likes of James Tarkowski, Dwight McNeill and Conor Coady, they know what it is all about. They know how to grind out results and they will have to do that for a while.

“They need wins to try and build their confidence back. It is a team that is low on confidence from last season. They have played alright but they have lost both games. That causes a problem.

“Onana will help them though. He looks like a top player. He will need good players around him but I expect him to have a real impact.”
