Robinson issues ‘big’ Newcastle United verdict after Chris Wood exit update

Paul Robinson would be “surprised” if Newcastle United sold Chris Wood in the January transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England number one said the 31-year-old “has a big part to play” at St. James’ Park between now and the end of the season.

Wood has started both of Newcastle’s games over the festive period.

As quoted by the Shields Gazette (28 December), the New Zealand striker revealed he’d “love to” stay with the Magpies for the “long term.”

Sources told Football Insider on 3 December that Leeds United are plotting to re-sign Wood this month.

His contract runs until the end of June 2024.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Wood’s future, Robinson said: “Wood has only been there for a short space of time.

“It would be a big coup if Leeds could prize him away but I would be surprised if Newcastle let him go. We all know Callum Wilson struggles with his fitness.

“Wood has shown in the past two games that he can more than compete at this level.

Newcastle

“January will be a difficult window for Newcastle. I think they will get priced out of the market for a lot of players. Given their league position, I think club’s will ask them to overpay for players.

“Wood still has a big part to play until now and the end of the season. There will be game time for him. He has a lifespan at Newcastle but I do not see him leaving this season.”

In other news, a source has revealed the door has opened for Newcastle United to sign Christian Pulisic after Chelsea development.
