Robinson issues emphatic verdict on Jacob Ramsey controversy at Aston Villa

Paul Robinson has claimed the officials were right not to send off Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the tackle on Jacob Ramsey was “in between a yellow and a red” and probably would have been a sending off last season.

Chilwell was booked for a late challenge on Ramsey in the first half of Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Villa Park.

Referee Robert Jones did not adjudge the foul to be worth of a red card despite the fact Ben Chilwell’s studs were raised.

VAR official Stuart Attwell did not deem his colleague to have made a clear and obvious error.

When asked by Football Insider if Chilwell was lucky not to be send off at Villa Park, Robinson said: “It was one of those that was in between a yellow and a red.

“I think last season we may have seen a red card for that. However, this season we have seen more leniency from the referees.

“Look, it could have gone either way but I do not want to see a player get sent off for that. I do not think he was out of control.”
