Robinson issues emphatic verdict on Joe Willock controversy at Newcastle United

Paul Robinson has slammed the decision to disallow Joe Willock’s goal for Newcastle United against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper said the goal should have stood or Eddie Howe’s side should have been awarded a penalty.

The Magpies looked to have opened the scoring when Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell turned the ball into his own net.

However, referee Michael Salisbury ruled out the goal after being told to consult the pitch-side monitor on the advice of VAR official Lee Mason.

The officials deemed Joe Willock to have fouled Vicente Guaita in the build-up to the goal, even though the contact appeared to have been caused by a push from Mitchell.

Speaking to Sky Sports (3 September), Newcastle manager Eddie Howe fumed over the decision in the goalless draw at St. James’ Park.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the incident and decision, Robinson said: “VAR has not worked this weekend.

“It is as simple as that.

“In this case, the goal should have been allowed to stand. If anything, the right decision would have been a penalty to Newcastle. If you’re not going to give the goal you give a penalty.

“It was another example of VAR not working this weekend. The bad decisions seem to have all come at once. The officials have a lot to answer.”
