Man City news: Robinson issues ‘crazy’ Erling Haaland claim after new development

Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Man City striker Julian Alvarez after Argentina lifted the World Cup.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 22-year-old’s limited game time at club level shows the “ridiculous” squad depth at the Etihad.

Alvarez helped Argentina achieve World Cup triumph on Sunday (18 December).

The forward was a key part of Lionel Scaloni’s side, scoring four goals in five starts.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola has predominantly used Alvarez as an impact substitute in the Premier League this season.

When asked by Football Insider if Alvarez should be given more game time at club level on the evidence of his performances at the World Cup, Robinson said: “Man City’s squad depth is ridiculous.

“To have a World Cup winner as your second choice striker must be nice. Alvarez has so much ability. It’s crazy to think that he does not start every game for his club but that is testament to how good Haaland is as well.

“Alvarez is a world-class talent. He will not be in a rush to leave Man City even if he isn’t playing regularly and that is because he is at a club that is challenging for every major trophy.

“We know Haaland’s injury record is not the best. He is not always 100 per cent fit. He does not always play.

“If you are going to play for one of the world’s best teams you have to accept competition. I knew Alvarez was very good but this World Cup has really brought him to the fore.”
