Robinson makes Aurier prediction after Sky update on Arsenal move after Tottenham exit

Paul Robinson insists Tottenham had no choice but to terminate Serge Aurier’s contract after singing Emerson from Barcelona.

The former Spurs stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on Aurier.

Tottenham confirmed the departure of Aurier late on deadline day (August 31st) after the mutual termination of his contract.

Today (3 September) Sky Sports reported the defender wants to stay in England and would “consider” a move to Arsenal.

Robinson insists Tottenham were never going to pay Aurier to just sit in the stands and watch his teammates.

“If the player wants to leave, he wants to play,” Robinson told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs.

“Sometimes a player will waive what they have on their contract. I can’t imagine Spurs will have paid him off because they didn’t get a transfer fee for him.

“It must be a mutual agreement for him to leave and to go and pick his wages up elsewhere.

“It’s clear that he wasn’t wanted at the club for a long time. It didn’t really work for him.

“He played well in January last season but with the manager reshaping the team, it makes sense to have a clear out.

“Especially when you pay and bring in a player like Emerson who’s on good wages as well.

“You don’t need to pay someone to stay in the stands.”

Aurier joined Tottenham from PSG in 2017 for £23million, signing a five-year deal that was set to expire next summer.

The Ivorian made 110 appearances for Spurs across all competitions, scoring eight goals.
