Robinson shares inside verdict on Allardyce potentially quitting West Brom after major Sky update
Sam Allardyce will only stay at West Brom if he is given assurances by the board, according to Paul Robinson.
The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 66-year-old will need guarantees over transfer funds and certain players’ futures if he is to continue as manager.
Albion’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed on Sunday following a 3-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates.
According to Sky Sports, Allardyce will sit down with West Brom bosses on Wednesday to discuss whether he will continue as manager next season.
A clause in the Englishman’s current contract, which expires in the summer of 2022, allows either party to walk away now that the club have returned to the Championship.
Robinson, who played under Allardyce at Blackburn Rovers, is adamant his former gaffer is the best man for West Brom next term.
“I thought he would leave until I heard his comments last week,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.
“Knowing Sam well and having played for him there is no-one better equipped to get them out of the Championship than him. He is one of the best man-managers I have ever worked for and he’s also so tactically aware. He can get West Brom out of the Championship.
“He will only stay if he is given assurances over a transfer budget and players staying. He needs to do it how he wants to do it.
“If he gets assurances and commitment from the board there is no doubt about it, he will get them out of the Championship at the first go.
“If things aren’t right, given the stage of his career he is at, why would he bother? Unless it is right for him, why would he bother?
“He is the the perfect fit for them in the Championship.”
