Recruitment will be “extremely important” for Newcastle United this summer and Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer would not be a bad start, according to Paul Robinson.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and England number one claimed a return of key personnel from injury will also be a “massive boost” for Steve Bruce ahead of the 2021-22 campaign.

The Scottish Sun claim the Magpies have stepped up their interest in Ajer, 23, and sent scouts to watch him at Ibrox last weekend.

However, the Norway international, who has made 44 appearances across all competitions this season, was far from his best in a 4-1 loss for the Hoops.

Ajer is fast approaching the final 12 months of his contract at Parkhead and could be available for a knockdown fee at the end of the campaign.

When asked if the centre-half would be a welcome addition at St. James’ Park, Robinson told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs:“There will be a few clubs watching Ajer.

“I do not think he has set the world alight up at Celtic this season. It is not a bad signing and you could probably get him at a decent price but Newcastle fans will not be inspired by that.

“Recruitment is going to extremely important for Steve Bruce this summer as will having a fully fit squad at the start of pre-season. That would be a massive boost after the injuries they have had.”

Newcastle showed a keen interest in signing Celtic’s Olivier Ntcham in the January window.

However, the centre-midfielder opted to join Ligue 1 giants Marseille instead.
