Robinson worried about West Ham after journalist’s ‘huge’ transfer update

West Ham would be taking a “huge risk” if they didn’t sign a striker to provide cover and competition for Michail Antonio before the window closes, according Paul Robinson.

The former Arsenal and Everton forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed David Moyes’ side “would struggle” if Antonio, 31, was sidelined through injury or suspension this season.

The Hammers have been playing with just one senior striker since the departure of club-record signing Sebastien Haller to Ajax in January.

However, The Express‘ Ryan Taylor reported on August 24th the Irons have rejected the chance to sign a number of replacements in this window.

Tammy Abraham, Alassane Plea, Luuk de Jong and Odsonne Edouard have all reportedly been turned down by David Moyes and his staff.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if West Ham could cope with just one recognised centre-forward, Robinson said:

“Antonio has been absolutely brilliant for David Moyes.

“I think they will really miss him if he is injured or suspended which is why it would be a huge risk not to sign adequate cover in that position.

“The way West Ham play is reliant on his pace and power leading the line. He plays in a similar way to Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane. If he was missing for any length of time they would struggle.

“They need to strengthen in that area before the window closes. It is a really difficult sell though because Antonio will start if he’s fit.

“Moyes knows he needs to strengthen the squad but he will not bring bodies in for bodies sake. He will only bring in players who are going to strengthen them, players that he likes.

“Yes, Andriy Yarmolenko can play in that position but he is not of the same ilk as Antonio.”
