Rodgers has another brutal dig at Griffiths after Celtic triumph v St Johnstone
By Dominic Toner
Brendan Rodgers has taken another brutal swipe at striker Leigh Griffiths after Celtic’s 5-2 win against St Johnstone on Sunday.
The Bhoys maintained their unbeaten domestic run this season with a stunning comeback win, which was led by a hat-trick from second-half substitute Moussa Dembele.
Celtic boss Rodgers praised forward Dembele for his contribution after the game, but took yet another dig at Griffiths after publicly shaming his attitude and professionalism last week.
Rodgers references the number nine jersey that is currently held by Griffiths and is often worn by a team’s principal goal threat, and claims it’s a lot easier to win matches when the team have a player such as Dembele making such an impression in the striker position.
“He’s at a club where he wants to be at. You see the difference when you have a number nine,” Rodgers said, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account.
Rodgers’ comment is a thinly veiled criticism of Griffiths and further suggests the manager is unhappy with the team’s former leading front man.
Griffiths is currently sidelined through injury and it’s the second time this season he has suffered a setback.
Rodgers told the Daily Record last month that the 26-year-old had to work on his fitness to stay at the top of his game.
Griffiths has made 26 appearances this season and scored 13 goals in return, but it is some way off his remarkable tally of 40 goals in 51 games last year.
The Scotland international has seen some pressure taken off him by team-mate Dembele, who has been in sensational form this campaign and has already scored 23 times.
In other Celtic news, the club’s supporters reacted on Twitter to Gary Mackay-Steven’s performance against St Johnstone.
