Rodgers: Compper can fill Celtic boots of massive fans favourite

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has claimed that new signing Marvin Compper can fill the boots of departed favourite Kolo Toure after his arrival from RB Leipzig.

Compper, a one-time German international, was signed from Bundesliga outfit Leipzig for a fee of around £1million ahead of the January window, joining the Hoops on a two-and-a-half year deal.

Rodgers has now made an interesting admission about the fact that Celtic were looking for an experienced defender, and voiced his hopes that Compper could fill in for the departed Toure, who retired at the end of last season.

As quoted by the Daily Record in their live blog (24/12/17, 09:14), Rodgers said: “It was that type we were after. With all due respect to us up here when looking at centre halves you are either getting a player at the beginning of their career or one towards the end. The 32-36 bracket.

“When Kolo moved on I felt we were missing someone of that status. Marvin brings that and has history of playing at the top end of the Bundesliga.

“You have a lot of younger players here. Hopefully they improve, you gain a hefty price for them and they move on. We understand that. But I believe you need experience alongside them aswell, particularly in defensive positions.”

Compper has had a long career in the German top-flight, spending three years at Borussia Monchengladbach before a move to Hoffenheim, where he made 171 appearances over a five-year period.

He then moved to Serie A to play for Fiorentina, but a move back to Germany followed just a year later, joining Leipzig and helping them to promotion to the Bundesliga.
