Rodrigo Bentancur update amazes expert amid Bernardo Silva reveal
Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a “very harsh” punishment after being banned for seven games following his comments towards teammate Heung-min Son.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s unlikely there is proof to suggest the Uruguay international is racist or has a problem with the Spurs captain.
Bentancur was handed the seven-game ban by the FA on 18 November for using a racial slur aimed towards Son on Uruguayan TV in June.
The 27-year-old was also fined £100,000 and ordered to take part in a mandatory face-to-face education programme.
Tottenham have since appealed against the length of the ban, which will see the midfielder suspended until 26 December.
Manchester City star Bernardo Silva was handed a one-game ban and fined £50,000 in 2019 following a controversial tweet about his former teammate Benjamin Mendy.
Rodrigo Bentancur ban unlikely to be significantly reduced after Tottenham appeal
Borson doesn’t believe Bentancur’s ban will be significantly reduced on appeal.
He told Football Insider: “I don’t really understand why it was seven games when we have seen other cases that have been far less, like the Bernardo Silva situation.
“But I think when you appeal these sorts of things, you are fighting over only maybe one or two games.
“It’s not going to be materially different, so he’s likely to be out until pretty much Christmas in any scenario.
“But on the face of it, it looks very harsh.
“I doubt they have proof of actual intent and that he is racist or has a problem with Son.

“Son doesn’t seem to have made an issue out of it.
“The problem they have got is that I don’t think that they are going to have great scope for reducing it on appeal because the facts are not disputed.”
