Romaine Mundle reacts to Sunderland announcement after loan exit confirmed

Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle has reacted after the Black Cats confirmed a surprise loan exit ahead of their return to the Premier League next month.

Sunderland sealed promotion to the Premier League last season with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United in the play-off final at Wembley to end their eight-year spell out of the top-flight.

Mundle was a key performer throughout their Championship campaign, with five goals and two assists in 24 league appearances amid hamstring injury issues.

The Black Cats have already sold Jobe Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund for a sizeable fee this summer, but Football Insider recently revealed that Chris Rigg and Dan Neil both look more likely to stay on Wearside than leave the club ahead of the new season.

Regis Le Bris will not want to lose any more important players, with Sunderland likely facing a tough challenge to stay up in the top-flight, but Mundle has been linked with a move away in recent times, with both PSV and OGC Nice interested in signing him this summer, according to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie.

Sunderland confirm Adil Aouchiche loan exit

Mundle remains a Sunderland player for now, but one Black Cats attacker who will not be partaking in their return to the Premier League is French youth international Adil Aouchiche.

The 22-year-old spent the second-half of last term out on loan at Portsmouth, after featuring in just eight league games for Sunderland, and the club confirmed his summer loan move to Scottish side Aberdeen on Sunday (6 July) with an Instagram post that read: “Adil Aouchiche has completed a loan move to Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen. The 22-year-old winger will spend the 2025-26 season at the Pittodrie Stadium. Best of luck, Adil!”

Sunderland’s Aouchiche announcement was met with confusion from supporters, with one calling it “weird,” and another dubbing it “random,” but his Black Cats teammate Mundle offered his support as he left a like on the post.

Sunderland need to be busy in the transfer window to have a better chance of staying up

Football Insider verdict

The gap between the Premier League and the Championship seems to be getting bigger each year, and despite their impressive promotion, Sunderland’s summer has to be about making as many good signings as possible to have any chance of staying up next season.

Regis Le Bris has certainly been busy in recent weeks, with Habib Diarra signed for a club-record £30million fee [BBC] from Strasbourg, while Noah Sadiki has joined the club from Union SG for a reported figure of £15m. [BBC].

They will need to do even more before the window closes at the start of September, though, and former club scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Sunderland are looking to sign Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi as they try to further bolster their midfield options.

Football Insider also recently revealed that Sunderland are considering a free transfer move for Abdoulaye Doucoure after his Everton exit, so it is clear that they are doing all they can to give themselves a better chance of survival next season.
