Roman Abramovich cited as Chelsea man ‘makes fans angry’ – Kieran Maguire

Todd Boehly was ‘naive’ to think he could play a major role at Chelsea in his first full season as owner.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Boehly’s decision to step back from his Chelsea responsibilities.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Boehly will cut his day-to-day involvement at Stamford Bridge by half after an underwhelming campaign with the Blues.

Chelsea finished the Premier League season in 12th after recording only 11 wins in the 2022/23 calendar while scoring a record-low 38 goals.

Boehly’s side was overseen by three different managers throughout the campaign, with Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard all spending time in the managerial hot seat.

Maguire believes Chelsea fans will be missing Roman Abramovich’s method of running the club after enduring Boehly for a season.

Todd Boehly was naive in thinking that he could play such a major role at Chelsea,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

He might be very good at baseball, but football is a very different industry and getting things integrated is absolutely essential.

Otherwise, you end up with good footballers rather than a good team.

Clearly the relationship with a series of coaches has not been perfect and he’s had to take the brunt of the fans’ anger on the back of that.

Chelsea fans will still be bemoaning the loss of Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea

Abramovich was the antithesis of Boehly in that he didn’t get involved at all.

He made ruthless decisions, but he wasn’t involved on an operational basis.
