Ronald Koeman believes Leighton Baines has been one of Everton’s best performers in recent games as he looks set to make his 300th Toffees league appearance.
Baines, 32, is set to reach the landmark by starting on the left side of Koeman’s defence against former manager David Moyes on Saturday, as Everton take on Sunderland at Goodison Park.
Speaking to the Toffees’ official website, former Southampton manager Koeman hailed England international Baines and claims his importance in Merseyside stretches beyond the pitch.
“We are really lucky to have Leighton at a good level and at good fitness. He’s been one of the best players in the last few games,” Koeman claimed.
“I like him as a player and as a person as well. He is important for younger players. He’s that professional player you want in the team as a manager.”
The former Wigan defender has featured in Everton’s fantastic recent form, starting and finishing the Toffees last five games in which they have taken 11 points from a possible 15.
Baines will be hoping to play an integral part in helping the Merseyside outfit secure a fourth win in six league games, stretching an unbeaten league run to nine games.
Everton’s number three, who has made a huge 371 Premier League appearances throughout his career, has had a hand in five goals for the Toffees this season.
Scoring twice against Manchester United and Southampton, Baines has also provided three assists as well as helping his side keep seven clean sheets during his 20 outings this term.
In other Everton news, Koeman has revealed he spoke to this midfielder after a poor display against Middlesbrough.
