Rotherham, Bolton Wanderers and Oxford race to sign Southend star Harry Cardwell – sources

Rotherham, Bolton, Oxford, Exeter and Gillingham are chasing Southend hot-shot Harry Cardwell, sources have told Football Insider.

Cardwell, 27, has caught the eye in the National League with 17 goals and four assists in 37 appearances so far this term.

The former Reading forward’s form has brought him onto the radar of a host of clubs higher up the football pyramid.

Cardwell has a buy-out clause in his contract at Southend, which he signed in February.

That deal is set to run until June 2026 – but the forward is attracting serious interest from EFL clubs ahead of the summer window.

Cardwell came through the ranks at Hull and Reading but failed to make a senior appearance for either club.

However, the forward does have experience in the EFL – playing 37 times for Grimsby in League Two between 2017 and 2020.

He has also played non-league football for Stockport, Woking, Braintree and Chorley but is enjoying the most prolific season of his career at Roots Hall this term.

The 27-year-old was capped once by Scotland at Under-21 level.

Rotherham have already had their relegation from the Championship confirmed, while Bolton are chasing promotion to the second tier this term.

Oxford and Exeter sit mid-table in League One, while Gillingham are 13th in League Two.
