‘Ruben Amorim has broken the golden rule at Man United’

Ruben Amorim has broken the “golden rule” at Man United with his heavy criticism of the players, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the manager should never publicly criticise his players.

As a result, Brown warned that the players’ morale could be negatively affected by Amorim’s comments and apparent lack of belief in his team.

This comes after the manager labelled his United side “the worst in the club’s history”, and admitted that Erik ten Hag and Ruud van Nistelrooy were “better than me in training this team”.

Amorim’s public criticism of his side is not doing anybody any favours at Old Trafford, and is only increasing the pressure on the players.

Meanwhile, the former scout insisted that the boss may have to change his style of play if the players at his disposal cannot adapt to his preferred formation.

Ruben Amorim slammed for latest Man United criticism

Brown previously slammed Amorim for his public criticism of Marcus Rashford, when the boss explained he would prefer to start the goalkeeping coach then the now-Aston Villa man.

Now, the former scout who worked with a number of elite managers during his time at Old Trafford including Sir Alex Ferguson and Ron Atkinson, insisted that Amorim has shown naivety in his coaching style amid growing pressure.

I don’t think it helps anybody, coming out with these quotes,” he told Football Insider.

“I think he’s a bit naive in terms of his management skills in that regard.

“The golden rule is you never criticise your players in public, and you never criticise the fans.

“But he seems to have thrown the rule book out of the window.

“I get it, when he came he didn’t know the players, there were a lot of injury issues and he didn’t know who was going to be available and at the top of their game.

“So he had to experiment with different players in different positions and give minutes to all of them.

“But we’ve gone through all of that now, and I think it’s the same with any manager, you have to work with what you’ve got.

“It’s no use coming out and saying the players don’t suit the system or they’re not used to the style of play, or criticising the players in the press.

“You have to adapt to the players you’ve got and make the best of what may be a bad situation.

“He’s got a very good reputation as a coach, but I’m not so sure he’s showing that. There are too many up and down performances.”

Man United hit by devastating £27m blow

Amid the growing criticism of Amorim and his team, Man United are growing more concerned about the club’s financial position and the off-field repercussions of their performances.

Football Insider revealed on 6 February that the club are set to be more than £27million down on their anticipated Premier League prize money this season.

They currently sit 13th in the table, having dropped below Crystal Palace after their 2-0 win at Old Trafford last time out, and are 14 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea after 24 games.

As a result, they look set to receive a significant financial blow if there is no turnaround in performances and results under Amorim, further tamping up the pressure.
