Ruben Amorim has last laugh over Man United transfer target he was mocked for

Ruben Amorim and the Manchester United board disagree on several areas of transfer strategy for the squad.

The differences in opinions were just one of the many grievances that led to Man United’s decision to sack Amorim last week.

The 40-year-old was ultimately in charge for just over 14 months, with his final game having been drawn 1-1 with Leeds United.

Man United have now appointed Michael Carrick as an interim manager, in preparation for their search for a new permanent figurehead in the summer.

Oliver Glasner has been mentioned among Man United’s targets, with the Austrian expected to leave Crystal Palace at the end of his contract.

Ruben Amorim eyed Danny Welbeck

Man United lost 2-1 to Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday, and it was a familiar foe who ended up dumping them out of the competition.

Since leaving the Red Devils in 2014, Danny Welbeck has scored eight times against his former club.

Three of those goals came for Arsenal, including his first as a visitor in the 2015-16 FA Cup, the competition the Gunners would go on to win that season.

The former England international swapped the Emirates Stadium for Vicarage Road in 2019, and Brighton‘s AMEX Stadium in 2020.

But the goals against Man United have not dried up. The 35-year-old’s strike on Sunday was his fifth against his boyhood club since joining the Seagulls, and his fourth at Old Trafford.

It was a superb take, too – Welbeck needed just one touch before he smashed the ball past Senne Lammens and into the top corner.

Sky Sports have reported since the game that Welbeck was actually among Amorim’s favoured options to strengthen his front line in the transfer window – an idea decision-makers disagreed with.

Welbeck could be the perfect man for Man United

Welbeck’s second wind has been incredible to watch. The striker was so badly hit by injuries during his time with Arsenal and those issues have not completely gone away, but they have been far less common.

The striker scored 10 Premier League goals for Brighton last season, and he already has eight this season. Some are even touting him for a return to the England set-up.

That pedigree of goal-scoring would be hard to find cheaper elsewhere for Man United, and the 35-year-old may well be the type of presence the attackers at Old Trafford need.

The likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and now Benjamin Sesko, have all struggled to cope with the Premier League – it could not hurt to have the experience of a striker like Welbeck to lean on for guidance.
