Ruben Amorim’s first Man United signing & January transfer plan

Ruben Amorim may be made to wait before making his first signing as Man United boss, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that there is a lack of funds available for the new boss in January, and he may have to wait until the summer to make any major changes.

Sources say United were made to fork out substantial fees to part ways with Erik ten Hag and bring in Amorim, which has impacted their ability to spend.

Several Sporting CP stars have been linked with moves to follow the Portuguese manager to Old Trafford, as they consider their options ahead of the transfer window.

The likes of Viktor Gyoekeres have been mentioned, but there is a feeling that any deal for a major star would have to come at the end of the season.

As a result, the manager may be forced to work with the options already available to him unless the club can raise funds via sales in the winter.

Ten Hag was heavily backed throughout his time as United manager, and the summer window was no different as they landed five new signings worth around £185million.

Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui all arrived under the previous manager’s guidance, but have left the club short of funds.

The signing of Ugarte was only made available by the deadline-day sale of Scott McTominay to Napoli as the club needed to raise funds.

A similar trend is now expected in January, with any incoming deals set to be driven by any money the club can raise via sales.

This will limit their activity in the mid-season market, although they are said to be open to any deal that becomes available if the budget permits.

However, United are expected to back the new boss in the summer of 2025 and are keen to show the same level of support in the transfer market as they did for Ten Hag.

The board want to provide Amorim with the players he needs to make his style of play work, and will be willing to spend big when funds become available.
