Ruben Amorim’s January transfer plan revealed by Man United insider

Man United are not expected to be busy in the January transfer window despite Ruben Amorim’s appointment, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during the club’s most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that their spending powers have been limited by recent outlays.

The decision to part ways with Erik ten Hag is said to have cost around £17million, before they paid Amorim’s £8.3million release clause to buy him out of Sporting CP.

As a result, the club’s finances have suffered a large dent which has limited the amount they will be able to spend to back the manager in January.

Instead, the new boss may be made to wait until the end of the season before he can make any serious changes to the squad he has inherited.

There are also concerns behind the scenes about the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules as they were forced to sell before they could buy in the summer.

Brown previously Football Insider that Scott McTominay was sold out of necessity as they had to raise money before spending on Manuel Ugarte’s transfer from PSG.

Ruben Amorim made to wait for first Man United signing

Football Insider revealed on 1 November that United are lacking funds and may need to wait until the summer before Amorim can be properly backed.

Brown, who also worked for the likes of Tottenham and Aston Villa and has a wealth of experience in recruitment at the top level, insisted that the boss will have to work with what he’s got available to him for the time being.

The club would have made him aware of what he’ll be able to spend,” he told Football Insider.

“They spent a lot of money getting the manager in and getting Ten Hag out.

“From what I’ve heard, there’s not a lot of money left to spend on players.

“The board will expect that they’ve appointed a top-line coach who can coach the players that are already available to him.

“That includes helping the younger lads to develop and helping some of the experienced ones turn in more consistent performances.

On top of that, there’s the profit and sustainability situation which we know United have struggled with.

They spent big in the summer and they left them with not much money at the end of the window.

“It’ll be interesting to see how Amorim approaches things and works with the players he’s got.

“He’ll be given time to assess the squad, then in the summer funds will become available and he can make the changes he feels need to be made.”

In other news, Amorim is set to make a decision about the future of Harry Maguire.
