Ryan Fraser deal backed to trigger Newcastle United January signing blizzard – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Ryan Fraser’s potential January exit will allow Newcastle United to spend big in January as they target a Champions League berth.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the former Bournemouth star would jump at the chance to play week-in, week-out.

According to the Northern Echo (5 December), Southampton are set to make a January move for Fraser, 28 – with Brentford also interested in his services.

The report claims the Scotland international has been identified as a player who will be allowed to move on in order for the Magpies to make signings of their own.

Fraser has made just eight Premier League appearances this term – just three of which have been as part of the starting lineup.

His St James’ Park contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025.

Whelan insisted the move would work “for all parties”.

He told Football Insider’s Charlotte Cohen: “Southampton need players through the door.

“They’re in a predicament at the moment – a very sensitive place in the league table.

“Fraser has got experience, he’s played in the Premier League a long time.

“This is something I can see happening. Newcastle United are going after a different calibre of player now, they’re headed in a different direction.

“They’re in a really healthy place, and I’d expect them to go out and give themselves a better chance of finishing in the European spots in January.

“That can be done by going out and spending money – even if they’re paying over the odds – on players who will help them do that.

“That will require players to leave. I think Fraser would rather play every week than sit on the bench for a successful side.

“I think it’s something that works for all parties.”
