Ryan Mason backed to be new Tottenham manager after source’s sack reveal – expert
Alan Hutton has urged Tottenham to replace Cristian Stellini with Ryan Mason until the end of the season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs defender said the initial appointment of Stellini as caretaker manager “makes no sense” and “guaranteed” Mason would be a better alternative.
The Lilywhites suffered the latest blow in their top four hopes after a 6-1 hammering by Newcastle United on Sunday (23 April).
The London club have won just one of their four Premier League games since Stellini took over from former boss Antonio Conte.
Football Insider revealed today (24 April) that Tottenham are set to hold crisis talks over sacking the current caretaker manager and appointing someone new for the remaining games of the 2022-23 campaign.
Sunday’s defeat has left the Italian’s job hanging by a thread and is now likely to be sacked.
Mason is currently acting as Stellini’s assistant boss but has previously taken charge of Spurs after Jose Mourinho was sacked in 2021.
Hutton insisted Mason should have been Spurs’ first port of call to act as interim boss.
“Ryan Mason is there, I know he was there under Conte but he is his own man,” he told Football Insider.

“He has taken charge before, he has his own ideas and will have his own way of wanting them to play and I can guarantee it would not be the formation that they are playing.
“That brings change, it is a different voice whereas at the moment in time we are hearing the same stuff, we are seeing the same stuff, so it makes no sense.“
