Sadio Mane could quit Liverpool for free after ‘massive’ Anfield source reveal – pundit

Sadio Mane “knows” he can leave Liverpool for a “massive contract” elsewhere as Jurgen Klopp’s side prepare to open talks, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 30-year-old’s potential departure would not “cripple” the Anfield club.

A recruitment source told this site on Sunday (17 April) that Liverpool are planning to offer Mane a new contract – but will not break the bank to keep him.

The forward’s current deal is set to expire in June 2023 – meaning he can negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in under eight months.

Mane, who scored and assisted as Liverpool beat Man United 4-0 last night (19 April), has netted 19 goals across all competitions this term.

Whelan suggested that form means “three or four clubs” will be lining up to hand him a “massive contract” if the Reds fail to reach a deal.

“He can negotiate a free transfer in eight months,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“If he decides he wants a massive contract, there are probably three or four clubs in the world who can – and will – pay that kind of money.

“He’s 30 now. He’s one of the best players in the world, and he knows he will get that £500,000-a-week deal if he were to leave Liverpool.

“They’ve got to think about the longevity. As good as he is, I don’t think Mane leaving would cripple Liverpool.

“They’re bringing players like Carvalho and Diaz in, who are incredible talents.”

Liverpool

Liverpool could still secure a historic quadruple this season after recent progression in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Mane has netted 116 goals in 260 games for the Anfield club since joining in 2016.
