Scottish football ‘making a fool of itself’ as new Rangers controversy panned – pundit

Frank McAvennie has claimed Scottish football is “making a fool of itself” after a VAR outage in the Rangers v Aberdeen League Cup semi-final.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker slammed the introduction of the technology into Scottish football.

During the match (15 January), referee Nick Walsh was forced to leave the field twice to be told VAR was malfunctioning with an eventual message appearing on the screen informing fans that the technology would not be in use for the remainder of the match.

Moments later, fans were informed that the technology was back working.

In a statement, relayed by the Times (16 January), the SPFL said that there was a technical issue that caused the VAR station to fail resulting in a five minute period where the technology was not in use.

The Gers went on to win the game 2-1 and progress to the final of the competition.

McAvennie was left unimpressed with the technology.

Scotland is making a fool of themselves,” he told Football Insider.

I did not want Scotland to start VAR. It only came in half way through the season but it feels like it has been there for ten years. The amount of disputes, the time they take, I just do not like it.

Rangers

They said the cold interfered with VAR, they have had plenty of warning that it is cold in Scotland, it should not be a surprise.

Luckily nothing happened when it was off because that would have summed up the SFA.
