Senior Rangers star destined for immediate exit at Ibrox as summer arrival seals fate
COMMENT
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has wasted no time in securing his first signings at Ibrox when he secured the signing of Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor – and McGregor’s signing must spell the end of Jak Alnwick’s Ibrox career.
The former Port Vale shot-stopper joined the Light Blues in January 2017 but has struggled to feature regularly in the first-team as he plays second-fiddle to Wes Foderingham.
McGregor’s arrival could mean both Foderingham and Alnwick move on this summer but with Alnwick now third-choice – and Liam Kelly having been given an extension to his contract recently – it is difficult to see where there is any place for Alnwick at Ibrox under Steven Gerrard.
Despite barely playing Alnwick did come into the side in the final few games of last season as Foderingham struggled with a shoulder injury and performed fairly well but never done enough to make anything he would be in a position to challenge Foderingham – never mind McGregor.
There won’t be much of a fee to be made if Alnwick is moved on this summer but with two far superior goalkeepers ahead of him, it makes much more sense than leaving him sitting in the stands every Saturday and having to foot the bill.
