SFA told to ‘hang their heads in shame’ as ‘disgraceful’ Celtic and Rangers footage emerges – expert

Frank McAvennie was shocked by the “disgraceful” condition of the Hampden pitch when Celtic faced Rangers in the Viaplay Cup final on Sunday (26 February).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said the state of the pitch “affected the game” and the Celts’ passing particular.

As shown on Viaplay Sports (26 February), Ange Postecoglou’s side beat their derby rivals 2-1 to claim the League Cup title.

After a weekend of League Cup semi-final action last month, both Postecoglou and Rangers boss Michael Beale complained about the condition of the pitch at Hampden Park.

The SFA and SPFL released a statement, as relayed by the Scotsman (16 January) saying that they would investigate and rectify the problems ahead of the final which, at that time, was over a month away.

But McAvennie wasn’t impressed with what he saw on Sunday.

The pitch was disgraceful again,” he told Football Insider.

It looked great beforehand, it looked magnificent. But it is an absolute disgrace that it is the national stadium. Nobody plays on it and yet they can’t get it sorted for the big showcase, two semi-finals and a final.

Celtic

The SFA have got to hang their heads in shame, it is ridiculous. It is embarrassing. Spend a bit of money and sort it out it is just ridiculous.

I thought it affected the game. Celtic are so good at getting it down and playing, I thought it affected the passing.
