‘Sheffield United fans rage as Todd Cantwell dives again in Blackburn clash’

Blackburn Rovers attacker Todd Cantwell left Sheffield United fans furious as the two sides went head to head at Bramall Lane.

The 27-year-old made the move to Ewood Park during the summer transfer window, when he joined from Scottish giants Rangers.

Since then, Cantwell has already scored some important penalties for Blackburn over the course of this season.

However, he was denied the chance to do so again as his side travelled to Bramall Lane to take on the Blades on Saturday afternoon (3 May).

Todd Cantwell goes down easily in penalty hunt

With Sheffield United missing out on automatic promotion to Leeds and Burnley, they already know they will be competing in the play-offs come the end of this season.

Blackburn meanwhile were looking to join them in that top six, knowing they had to beat the Blades and hope that two of Bristol City, Coventry and Millwall failed to win on the final day of the regular season.

As they attempted to do that, Cantwell would go down in the area not once but twice in the hope of finding an opening goal from the penalty spot.

However, referee Farai Hallam elected not to point the spot on both occasions, with the Sheffield United fanbase far from impressed with those efforts from the former Rangers man to win the spot kick.

Reporting on the game for Sky Sports Soccer Saturday about those incidents, Lynsey Hooper said live at Bramall Lane (1:01pm): “And boos ringing round from the home fans at Todd Cantwell, all directed at him, because he went over for a second time in the box trying to get a penalty for Blackburn.

“But it was a really soft touch and he went rolling around two or three times on the floor.”

Blackburn Rovers desperation at Sheffield United not surprising

Football Insider Verdict

The fact Cantwell went to these extremes to try and win those penalties should perhaps not be a huge shock in the circumstances.

Blackburn are under plenty of pressure to make the play-offs, given the potential prize that is on offer if they can secure a place in the top six.

Indeed, they were in an excellent position to do that earlier in the campaign before a disastrous run that left them playing catch-up playing catch up in the play-off race.

With that in mind it will be hugely frustrating for those at Ewood Park if they do miss out, and so they will be doing all they can to try and avoid such an outcome.

In this situation it appears Cantwell went to some considerable extremes to unsuccessfully try and improve the situation for Blackburn.

Not surprisingly that did not go down well with Sheffield United fans, who may be wondering why the attacker was not booked for diving.
