Shilen Patel sends message to West Brom fans as accounts reveal £33.9m loss

Shilen Patel has sent a message to West Brom fans via social media as the club’s accounts revealed a new financial loss at The Hawthorns.

The Baggies have experienced a wild 2024/25 campaign, going from Championship leaders to fighting for a top-six finish, losing Carlos Corberan to Valencia on Christmas Eve, and facing financial issues.

Okay Yokuslu, Conor Townsend and Brandon Thomas-Asante were all sold during the summer transfer window, and despite those exits, West Brom confirmed a loss of £33.9million for the period ended 2024.

Even with the appointment of Tony Mowbray last month, and the excitement surrounding it, the financial losses have left many concerned as the Baggies look to win promotion back to the Premier League.

Taking to X [28 February], Patel wrote: “A year now since Bilkul and I became part of the Albion Family, I am humbled by the journey so far and truly excited for the future.

“As I said a year ago, clear communication is key and I enjoyed reflecting on the past year and discussing future goals and opportunities.”

There are clearly a lot of issues still to be fixed at The Hawthorns, but Patel is taking the challenge in his stride and the fans absolutely adore him because of this.

Tony Mowbray delivering promotion could be huge at The Hawthorns

Football Insider verdict

West Brom have not been able to stabilise during Mowbray’s short time in charge as of yet, but there have been positive signs, especially after losing just one of their last four games.

Drawing too many games has been incredibly frustrating at The Hawthorns this season, with only Preston North End able to boast the same number, but promotion to the Premier League is still a possibility.

Semi Ajayi is the latest player to join Jed Wallace on the West Brom treatment table, adding a little more strain to the squad, but Mowbray’s knowledge and experience should be enough to secure a play-off spot.

The Baggies are currently battling against Blackburn Rovers, Coventry City, Bristol City and Watford for fifth and sixth in the Championship table, and with 12 games remaining, anything could happen.

Daniel Farke’s Leeds side look set to win the Championship title, with Sheffield United now falling five points behind, and Burnley another two points behind the Blades.
