‘Shocking’, ‘Disgraceful’ – Newcastle fans suggest Eddie Howe getting sacked after 4-2 defeat to Liverpool
A section of Newcastle United fans have made the extraordinary claim that Eddie Howe should be sacked following the team’s 4-2 defeat Liverpool on Monday night.
The home side tore Eddie Howe’s visitors apart and bombarded their goal in the most dominant attacking performance by any Premier League club this season.
Indeed, their expected goals figure of 7.27 was the highest ever recorded in a single Premier League game, with only their wastefulness in front of goal and some fine Martin Dubravka goalkeeping preventing a monumental margin of victory.
Newcastle’s performance came in for strong criticism from many of their own fans with the defeat their seventh in eight games and their ninth in the league from 20 matches this season, which means they are now ninth in the table and 11 points adrift of the top four.
A Mohamed Salah double and goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo secured the win for Liverpool, who are top of the league with a three-point advantage over second-placed Aston Villa.
Many supporters of Newcastle were critical of their team’s display and what they saw as the negativity of manager Howe, who responded to his team going 3-2 down by taking off an attacking player, Joelinton, and bringing on defender Jamaal Lascelles to go to five at the back.
There is concern that the team are in freefall and struggling to arrest the slide, with a devastating injury list over the last two months a big factor.
Next on the horizon is a mouthwatering FA Cup tie this weekend against bitter rivals Sunderland, although some fans claim Howe should not even be in the dugout for that clash.
